Drink has been opened by Shrila Amin, cousin of Jayesh Patel, owner of beer specialist Westholme Stores in Goring-on-Thomas, Oxfordshire.
Amin had been trying to sell the freehold store, which had been vacant for two years, before getting the inspiration to open her own business after seeing the line-up of beers in Patel’s store.
The shop had previously been home to wine and cheese retailer Truckles, and before that was Amin’s own Post Office.
“It was on the market for two years and a lot of people said ‘why don’t you just open your own shop?’,” said Amin.
“The Gujarati food angle was something I’d been thinking about for many years because it is a great cuisine but not too well known. When I saw the bottled beers at my cousin’s store the idea for beer and food matching came.”?The beer will focus on British microbreweries, world beers and international craft brews with “pile ’em high packs of canned lager banished”. There will be seasonal specials, limited edition bottlings and there are plans for Drink exclusives.
The store will be holding regular tasting days with brewers in attendance to talk about their beers. The food element comprises snacks made by Amin’s sisters from family recipes, plus loose curry pastes and spices.
