Constellation takes to the rails

27 July, 2010

The Trans Ocean subsidiary of wine logistics specialist Hillebrand has won a contract to handle all wine imports for Constellation Europe’s UK facility.

The deal covers both bulk and cased wine shipments from Europe and the New World to Constellation’s Avonmouth site, with the majority moving by rail for UK ports.

Trans Ocean said use of rail would eliminate over 1 million road miles currently done by trucks.

Seven trains a week will carry around 9 million bottles of wine as part of a three-year contract.

Simon Williams, senior vice president of the supply chain for Constellation, said: “The new initiatives enable us to both streamline our supply chain operations and reduce carbon emissions.”
