Alcohol Concern warns over calories

03 September, 2010

Drinkers in Wales donít realise how many calories are contained in their favourite tipples, health experts have warned.

The Welsh Assemblyís latest National Diet & Nutrition Survey found alcohol accounts for nearly 10% of the calories consumed by regular drinkers.

But Alcohol Concern Cymru research found that 82% of drinkers did not know how many calories were in a pint of beer or a glass of wine.

Even among those who count the calories in their diet, 43% ignore the calorific content of alcohol, according to the study of 1,000 Welsh drinkers.

British Dietetic Association spokeswoman Jacqui Lowdon said: ďAlcohol is a huge source of hidden calories, and with the population, particularly women, increasingly drinking more alcohol, this is another reason for them not to exceed the recommended maximum of two to three units per day. We know waistlines are getting bigger, and a womanís shape is more akin to a wine glass than an apple or pear. So if people are watching their waistline, watch that wine glass.Ē
