Champagne in allergy scare

03 September, 2010

The Food Standards Agency has issued an allergy alert over Heidsieck Monopole Blue Top NV Champagne.

Distributor Percy Fox has recalled four batches because they contain sulphites that are not declared on the label. The batch numbers are: 01757985, 01757965, 01757955 and 01757975.

The FSA said it represented a health risk to people sensitive to sulphites.

Percy Fox said in a statement that it was “investigating the absence of the required allergen statement ‘contains sulphites’ with respect to one of its agency brands”.

It added: “Percy Fox has been informed by Vranken Pommery Monopole, the brand owner, that the affected products were delivered to the trade in 2007 and comprised a total of 12,708 cases.”?It said it was working with trade customers to ensure unsold products were relabelled.

The statement added: “POS is being shared with relevant customers which advises consumers that the product does contain sulphites and any bottles purchased without the statement can be refunded or exchanged.

“We are working closely with the Food Standards Agency and Vranken Pommery Monopole on this matter.

“The relevant support organisations have been informed.” Notices are being displayed in stockists explaining why the Champagne has been recalled and what action consumers should take if they have bought some.
