Peckham’s sets sights on franchise

17 September, 2010

Scottish wine merchant and deli chain Peckham’s is seeking to set up a franchise operation as a result of unsolicited enquiries from potential investors.

Managing director Tony Johnston said the company would limit franchises to a 150-mile radius of its Glasgow base initially, although calls had been taken from as far away as Wales and Ireland from prospective franchisees.

Johnston said: “It’s something we’ve never done before, but we’ve been in business for 28 years and people ask if they can become a franchisee probably at least half a dozen times a year.”?The franchise scheme will be launched with Peckham’s top-end off-licence trading style for operational ease, but fresh food elements could be added later.

“Transport limitations would prevent us from taking on stores more than 150 miles from our base at this stage, but it could be that we’ll find areas with enough interest to be able to set up distribution centres from which a group of stores could be serviced as satellites.”?Johnston added: “Over the next 12 to 18 months I’d say we’d be pushed to bring on 20 stores, but I’d be delighted if we reached 10.”?

What makes wine special

Reaching the 50th instalment of Hemming’s Way is hardly the biggest milestone, but I don’t need much of an excuse to pour myself a glass of champagne before getting dressed. It’s a better reason than I had for all 49 other instalments, anyway. Not that that stopped me.
