Batemans thanks stores for support

17 September, 2010

Batemans, the Lincolnshire-based independent brewer and retailer, has reported “significant increases” to its off-trade sales over the past 12 months.

It said a new distribution channel through Ocado and an increase in own-brand development were among the reasons for the buoyant sales.

Mark Payne, Batemans’ off-trade controller, also praised Spar and Co-op for backing local brewers.

“In an increasingly tough climate, these retailers’ strategies of supporting regional businesses have paid off, as consumers retrench into brands they know and trust,” he said. “The Co-op has dedicated space in-store solely to local brands. Spar has also promoted native brands ahead of their national cousins.

“These retailers are recognising the importance that provenance plays in consumers’ reducing repertoires.”

Welcoming the wine rookie

It’s all true. Wine writers loaf around in a state of partial inebriation and partial undress, bitching about having to taste free wine all day and using recondite words like malolactic, terroir and recondite.
