Matthew Ford, who used to run Matthew Quinn in York, has also launched a home delivery service which allows shoppers in the city to order wine via Twitter and Facebook.
Barwines.co.uk also accepts orders by phone and email, and customers are encouraged to place orders during the day for delivery in the evening.
The site launched two weeks ago and has around 25 wines at the moment, but Ford expects to expand the range and introduce beers and spirits. It also features food-matching ideas and recipe suggestions, and empty bottles are collected for recycling when orders are delivered.
Ford told OLN he delivers drinks on foot, by bicycle, or for more distant orders, by car. “I have a really economical car and I try to be as green as possible,” he said.
Drinkprice.com has already been mentioned by Jancis Robinson MW in an article about drinks price comparison sites. As well as comparing prices of beers, wines and spirits, it will cover soft drinks, tea, coffee, gifts and accessories.
The site, which is still in its infancy, also features product reviews, news and video recommendations by Canadian actor Nathan Nolan.
Ford said: “It’s like a social drinks site. I would say it’s a cross between Snooth and Just Drinks, and we have got offers and voucher codes.”?The entrepreneur also plans to launch a trade and retail site promoting Riesling and Gewürztraminer later this year. The site will sell wines made from the aromatic grapes from all over the world to consumers. It will also have a list of the best Rieslings and Gewürztraminers from Germany and Alsace, with some from Austria, aimed at the trade.
“I love Riesling and Gewürztraminer is my favourite grape, and I think they are undervalued,” said Ford.
