New London shop offers every still wine on taste

01 October, 2010

A new West London wine shop has claimed to be the first retailer to offer consumers the opportunity to try every still wine it stocks.

Vagabond Wines opened in Vanston Place, near Fulham Broadway, two weeks ago and has five 20-bottle sampling machines.

Managing director Stephen Finch said they had been a “hefty” investment. The shop also has sparkling and fortified wines for sale, but these are not available to taste.

“At the moment it’s technically not possible for sparkling wine, and the sweeties can gunk up the system,” Finch said.

He said he was inspired to set up the business after he left New York to live in the UK.

“I was disappointed by wine shops here, especially given their proximity to Europe. My idea was to create a place where customers can try any wine sold,” he said.

Finch said around half the wines stocked were between £10-£15, 25% were below £10 and the rest above £15. They come from all over the world.

All reds, whites and rosés are available in 3.5cl sample sizes priced at 50p each, regardless of the price of the wine.

The shop also stocks a range of premium spirits and beers from local and specialist suppliers including Sambrook’s and Meantime, as well as vodkas and gins from Sipsmith and Sacred Spirits.

Donald Trump: the US has much to learn from history
