Blavod ends link with Cockspur rum

01 October, 2010

Whyte & Mackay is to take over the UK and Ireland distribution of Cockspur rum after the brand’s previous deal with Blavod Wines & Spirits fell apart over a contract dispute.

Brand owner West Indies Rum Distillery extricated itself from the Blavod deal “by mutual consent”.

The settlement followed allegations from Blavod that WIRD had breached the old distribution contract by seeking to activate an early-exit mechanism.

In a statement, Blavod said this allegation had now been withdrawn and a financial settlement made in Blavod’s favour.

Whyte & Mackay officially takes over as UK agent today (October 1). Cockspur will join a range that includes Dalmore, Jura and Vladivar.

Whyte & Mackay commercial director Shane Starkey said: “It allows us greater diversification as we now have premium rums to sit alongside our award-winning whiskies and vodkas.”?WIRD chairman John Taylor added: “This partnership offers a fantastic opportunity to take the distribution of the Cockspur brand to a whole new level.

“Whyte & Mackay’s proven track record of brand-building and comprehensive sales structure will give Cockspur a real boost and help ensure the brand reaches its true potential in the UK market.” Blavod said it would announce future plans for participation in the rum category “in due course”.
