A number of bottles identified as affected were removed from Asda shelves. Investigations by the retailer and spirits supplier began after a customer made the complaint at a store in Accrington, Lancashire (OLN, October 1).
Diageo said in a statement: “Having run tests on the bottle in question, Diageo GB can confirm it contains tap water rather than vodka, although the bottle itself was made by Diageo.
“These results are consistent with tampering.
“This is a very small-scale problem and we have no reason to believe the liquid is toxic or harmful to human health.
“Product quality is extremely important to us, so we will continue to work with Asda to ascertain where and when the tampering occurred.”
