Drinksworld has put one of the four shops under direct company management – bringing its total up to six – and may use the others as a springboard for a national franchise operation.
The Khera family – which operates Drinksworld alongside the Simply Fresh convenience store chain – has put the other three ex-First Quench shops into an informal franchise operation of five that it runs with friends and extended family members.
“It was a chance to offer a way in for people we know who had expressed an interest in running their own stores,” said director Sukhjit Khera. He added that the aim was to establish a franchise infrastructure before rolling out Drinksworld – which is a Costcutter member – as a more formal franchise package.
“We’re setting up the model ready for franchising,” Khera said. “This year, we’ve been mainly working on the convenience format and we’re looking to spend more time on Drinksworld in 2011.
“Once we’ve got the franchise model in place we’ll look at bringing in other retailers and going national because Costcutter can meet our delivery requirements anywhere in the country.”?Khera described Drinksworld as “an olden-days specialist off-licence” in style.
“We are not about stacking high and selling cheap continental 5% abv lager,” he added. “As well as giving good value for money we want to provide people with a quality range, so they know they can come into our stores and shop with confidence.”
