Clare Brewing acquires Nethergate

Nethergate Brewery in Suffolk has been bought by a company formed by three former members of the Adnams management team.

Clare Brewing will continue to operate the brewery under the Nethergate name. Clare is owned by ex-Adnams commercial director Rob Flanagan, off-trade boss Mark Holmes and head of procurement Mike Atkinson, along with Paul Knight who owns an accountancy business.

Nethergate was co-founded 24 years ago by Dick Burge who is retiring.

Flanagan said: “Nethergate has a great reputation established by the hard work of the team and we are very much looking forward to working with them to further develop the business, and over time create some exciting new beers.”?Holmes added: “We have some award-winning bottled beers and we now focus on developing our relationships with customers across the off-trade to make these beers available to consumers.”

All across England and Wales, vineyards are being harvested. Down winding country lanes come armies of welly-wearing conscripts wielding secateurs and buckets, ready to reap the rewards of our vines. Happily they come, their cheeks ruddy with pride. Half an hour later they’re crawling over muddy clods with lacerated hands, drenched in claggy juice and cold sweat, as if ploughing through an endurance race.
