The HIM study of 504 18 to 24-year-olds found that 57% buy most of their alcohol from multiple grocers, compared with 24% from pubs, 6% from off-licences and 3% from convenience stores.
The research, unveiled at this week’s Responsible Drinks Retailing Awards organised by OLN and sister magazine Morning Advertiser, found virtually all young adults consume at least one drink at home before a weekend night out. Half of those surveyed said they have either two or three drinks, while 27% have four or five. The average young man drinks 3.9 drinks before going out – for women the figure is three.
The survey found 38% drink at home once or twice a week, while 23% do so more frequently.
When asked where they bought their first alcoholic drink, 36% said in a pub or club, 27% said a supermarket, 10% said an off-licence and 8% said a convenience store.
