Selfridges scoops indie gong at Spirits Challenge 2010

Selfridges has won the award for Best Independent Spirits Retailer at the 2010 International Spirits Challenge, announ­ced at a ceremony in London this week.

Waitrose picked up Best Multiple Spirits Retailer, with the Best International Retailer award going to World Duty Free.

The trophy for the Supreme Champion Product was awarded to Japanese single malt whisky Yamazaki 1984. Producer Suntory also scooped the Distiller of the Year Award – the first time in the event’s 15-year history that the two awards were won by the same company.

The outstanding contribution award was picked up by Wild Turkey master distiller and industry veteran Jimmy Russell.

Other trophy winners included Green Chartreuse, Chairman’s Reserve Spiced rum, Whyte & Mackay 30 Year Old and Glenfiddich 40 Year Old.

English wine: a happy harvest for Christmas

All across England and Wales, vineyards are being harvested. Down winding country lanes come armies of welly-wearing conscripts wielding secateurs and buckets, ready to reap the rewards of our vines. Happily they come, their cheeks ruddy with pride. Half an hour later they’re crawling over muddy clods with lacerated hands, drenched in claggy juice and cold sweat, as if ploughing through an endurance race.
