Published:  18 November, 2010

Majestic has posted a 20% profit rise in the half-year to September 27.

The wine warehouse group saw profits increase from £6.1 million in the same period in 2009 to £7.3 million.

Total sales were up 10.2% and like-for-like sales in UK stores were ahead by 7.6%.

The company said there was a substantial increase in "active customers", by 14%, to just under 500,000.

Online sales increased by 8.3% and now represent 9.1% of the company's UK retail sales.

Sales of wines priced at over £20 were up 20.2%.

Chairman Phil Wrigley said: "The change to a six-bottle minimum purchase has been extremely popular with existing customers and has made Majestic more accessible to new customers."

Looking back to look forward

Wine is a liquid time capsule. Drinking older vintages not only recalls the weather conditions and winemaking styles of the past, it encourages us to reflect upon our own histories. Such reminiscence often inclines towards romanticised nostalgia. Especially after the second bottle. But looking back is a great way of learning about the future.
