Both Champagne, worth £333 million, and other sparkling wines, worth £336 million, grew by 9% – but some of the biggest brands have seen sales drop, according to the latest figures from Nielsen, for the year to October 2, 2010.
The top three Champagne brands all experienced a fall in sales: Moët & Chandon by 8%, Veuve Clicquot by 4% and Lanson by 3%.
All the New World sparkling wines in the top 10 also saw takings slide: top brand Jacob’s Creek by 12%, Hardys Crest by 7%, Lindauer by 30% and Beringer by 8%.
Sales of cava, Prosecco and less well-known Champagne brands really motored. The biggest climber was Italian brand Borgo San Leo, which grew sales by 267%. Charles Lafitte Champagne was up 262%, and Italy’s La Gioiosa grew 121%.
The report comes as the supermarkets kick off their Christmas price war with many selling Champagne for less than £14.
