PLB takes on Hungarian wine
Published:  02 December, 2010

PLB has been appointed the UK agent for Hungarian winery Danubiana.

The Sussex-based wine importer will look after both on and off-trade distribution for Danubiana, representing a number of branded and exclusive labels including the Jon Josh range.

Buyer Joanna Cugley said: “Danubiana are able to offer affordable quality wines focused not only at entry level but also at the mid-range, and have the ability to produce wines showing distinct regionality from some fantastic lesser-known indigenous varieties as well as the international styles.

“Danubiana are part of the new age of Eastern Europe winemaking, with state-of-the art facilities and technical expertise, as well as a great commercial team who are very in tune with their key markets.”

Danubiana is a sister company of German winery Binderer St Ursula, and is the biggest exporter of Hungarian wines.

It has production sites at Bonyhád and Gyöngyös, with an annual production of approximately 15 million bottles of white, rosé and red wines.

Hungarian wine sales fell 4% in the year to September, according to Nielsen off-trade figures, with volumes down 5%.

Half an hour later they’re crawling over muddy clods with lacerated hands, drenched in claggy juice and cold sweat, as if ploughing through an endurance race.
