App works out true price of a bottle of wine

08 December, 2010

A new iPhone app has been launched to help consumers calculate how much tax they pay on the wine they buy.

The UK Wine Tax Calculator is free to download and is intended to show people how much of their money is going on the wine itself. The calculation is based on the abv, entered by the user, and whether the wine is still or sparkling.

Richard Ross, wine writer and owner of software developer APPetise, said: “Wine drinkers don’t usually think about tax when they are buying a bottle of wine, but they should.

“We pay a lot of tax on our wine, but we can make the most of the situation. Because of the way duty is charged, every extra pound that you spend on a bottle means a higher proportion of the cost goes on the liquid inside. The UK Wine Tax Calculator helps you understand how to get the best value when buying your favourite Chardonnay or Cabernet.”

The app will automatically adjust to January’s VAT increase and the expected duty rise in the Budget.

English wine: a happy harvest for Christmas

Happily they come, their cheeks ruddy with pride. Half an hour later they’re crawling over muddy clods with lacerated hands, drenched in claggy juice and cold sweat, as if ploughing through an endurance race.
