Oddbins move to champion locals

Oddbins is encouraging managers to source bottled beers from local brewers.

The move is a response to an 18% value increase in beer sales in its stores.

Breweries involved in the programme include Durham, Hook Norton, Vale, Compass, Westerham, Hopdaemon, Loddon’s and Dark Star.

A competition will be held with one beer being chosen for a national listing.

Buying director Richard Verney said: “Store managers will buy directly from their local breweries, looking for the highest quality craft beers available in their area.”?Managing director Simon Baile added: “Brewers will be invited to showcase their beers to customers at tasting events in the stores, a change from our regular wine tasting programme, giving customers the chance to sample the beer and meet the brewers.”

Hofmeister may need more than the bear essentials to succeed

So, George The Bear is back. It’s hard for some of us oldies to fathom, but there are those under, say, 40 who can’t actually remember Hofmeister and feel the cultural jolt supplied by the return of both the bear and the beer whose marketing campaigns it used to front.
