It took 70 firefighters to put out the blaze at the 13th-century Abbaye Notre-Dame de St-Remy in Rochefort, Belgium, on December 29.
The monks were dining when the fire broke out but all were evacuated and no one was hurt.
Rochefort export agent Alfons Vand- ermolen said: “It is so far, so good. No one was injured and the brewing of beer is still going on. It was only the oldest part of the monastery that was affected, although the flames were very close to the brewery.”?Initial reports suggested the fire had started in an electrical generator brought in as a back-up after problems with the mains supply.
Rochefort 6 was featured in beer writer Roger Protz’s 2009 book, 300 Beers To Try Before You Die.
