VOX SHOP?How was Christmas for you?

07 January, 2011

Christmas was slightly down on last year, but we think a lot of people who would have come up here on their holidays didn’t make it. The general comment around Keswick was that it wasn’t very busy. But then it cleared up a bit and we were very busy over New Year – what we lost at Christmas we made up for then, but overall sales stayed just about flat.”?Alan Dunn?Open All Hours?Keswick, Cumbria??“It was very busy. We have a microclimate in Cheadle, so we saw all these weather happenings over the rest of the country but it wasn’t too bad here.We had good sales across the board. Our beer sales are phenomenal now. Otherwise the pičce de resistance was Veuve Cliquot. Years ago we got the whole range of dummy bottles, right up to Nebuchadnezzar – which always gets attention but I’d never sold one. And now we’ve sold two in one week.”?Richard Genders? The Bottle Stop?Cheadle, Cheshire??“The snow meant it was fairly slow at first but the second half looked very good and we had a lot of people come in. It was our first Christmas so we weren’t really sure what to expect.”?Simon Broad? The Wine Shop & Tasting Room?Brighton, East Sussex??“It was very good in the end. We had a real glitch two weeks before Christmas because of the snow and people were hanging on, but in the past few days they decided to come out and spend money after all. December was 30% up on last year and the business as a whole was up over the entire year, so it’s all good news.”?Ruth Yates?Corks Out?Stockton Heath, Cheshire??“We benefit from having three shops right in the heart of communities. We got absolutely deluged with two weeks of snow and people couldn’t get to the big supermarkets, so they shopped with us instead.”?Andrew Lundy?Vino?Edinburgh??

COMMENT

Welcoming the wine rookie

It’s all true. Wine writers loaf around in a state of partial inebriation and partial undress, bitching about having to taste free wine all day and using recondite words like malolactic, terroir and recondite.
