Wines of Turkey holds first trade conference

07 January, 2011

The generic body for Turkish wines has announced the date of its first-ever trade conference.

Wines of Turkey said leading wine writers, including Jancis Robinson MW, DNA experts and viticulturalists, will be speaking at London’s Vinopolis on February 24 for the event, entitled Discover the Roots – Inaugural Wines of Turkey Conference & Tasting 2011.

A spokeswoman said: “It aims to launch Turkish wines into the British market and discuss the evidence that points to Turkey as being the possible birthplace of wine.”?She added: “Turkey is part of a region where winemaking has a very long history and where it possibly originated by at least 7000 BC.

“With the world’s fourth largest grape-growing area, it produces many excellent wines using indigenous grapes such as Emir and Narince for whites; and for reds, Kalecik Karasi, Okuzgozu and Bogazkere that deserve to be better known.”?OLN’s Tim Atkin MW and Charles Metcalfe will host masterclasses on the day.
