New faces from the US

This year’s annual Washington State and Oregon trade tasting will host two seminars. The first is at 11.30am titled the Multiple Personalities of Oregon Pinot Noir. This will be an interactive tasting and discussion looking at the influence of vintage, terroir and philosophy on Oregon Pinot Noir.

The Ageability of Washington Wines will be presented at 2pm by Chris Stone, deputy director of the Washington State Wine Comm-?ission. He says: “This relatively young region has already gained world-wide acclaim for its wines and is an industry made up of truly passionate and innovative growers and winemakers who get better and better with each vintage.

“In this seminar we will take a look at how well Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot from this great region develop over time, giving the audience a chance to glance into the past, and get a glimpse of the promise the future holds.”?World Wine Agencies will be showing its increased range from Powers Winery, which, according to the former’s director Nicky Burston, has “massive potential” in the UK. “We have a great following for the Powers brand among our?independent customers,” she says. “However, we still have a long way to go to maximise the potential of this iconic winery”.

The range includes three single vineyard wines: Coyote Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, Cougar’s Syrah and a Cabernet Sauvignon from the Champoux vineyard.

Also on show will be wines from the organic Badger Mountain vineyard.

Stratford’s Wine Agencies will be showing off the new packaging for bubbly producer Domaine Ste Michelle’s Brut and Blanc de Noirs. The agency says there is a “great range of POS” to help launch the new packaging. New vintages of Erath will be available to taste, including the Erath Oregon Pinot Noir 2008 and Erath Willamette Valley Pinot Noir 2008.

Tailor-made for the UK?Precept Wine Brands and D&D Wines International will present new vintages of their wines from Washington, including Washington Hills, produced in the Columbia Valley and blended specifically for the UK market (rrp £6.99).

Single varietal Steak House, made from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from the Magnificent Wine Comp­any (rrp £9.49) and value wines from Apex Ascent will be on taste. From Oregon the Primarius Pinot Noir 2009 will feature.

Hofmeister may need more than the bear essentials to succeed

So, George The Bear is back. It’s hard for some of us oldies to fathom, but there are those under, say, 40 who can’t actually remember Hofmeister and feel the cultural jolt supplied by the return of both the bear and the beer whose marketing campaigns it used to front.
