UK is world's biggest wine importer

13 January, 2011

UK wine consumption rose by 1.1% in 2010, according to figures released by Vinexpo in partnership with research organisation IWSR.

The figure reached 147 million cases and is expected to increase again by nearly 3% over the next four years.

The UK is the biggest importer of wines, in terms of both value and volume. It is the second largest market for wines in the world, behind the USA Ė which is due in part to the impact on prices caused by taxation.

But Britons remain 10th in the league table of wine consumers in terms of per capita drinking.

The research predicts further large increases in the UK for sales of rosť and sparkling wine. Rosť sales virtually doubled between 2005 and 2009, making the UK the fourth largest rosť market in the world.

What makes wine special

Reaching the 50th instalment of Hemmingís Way is hardly the biggest milestone, but I donít need much of an excuse to pour myself a glass of champagne before getting dressed. Itís a better reason than I had for all 49 other instalments, anyway. Not that that stopped me.
