More hail the cider Wassailing tradition

The National Association of Cider Makers has said Wassailing rituals, which take place this month in apple orchards across the West Country to ward off evil spirits and encourage the good ones, are becoming more popular among consumers.

Spokesman Simon Russell said: “The tradition of Wassailing is a wonderful part of our heritage. There is a growing interest in taking part.

“It is linked to the resurgence of cider and the wish to know more about where our food and drink is from.

“Apple grower and cider workers are not only upholding a countryside tradition but also adding interest to the modern success story of cider.”

English wine: a happy harvest for Christmas

All across England and Wales, vineyards are being harvested. Down winding country lanes come armies of welly-wearing conscripts wielding secateurs and buckets, ready to reap the rewards of our vines. Happily they come, their cheeks ruddy with pride. Half an hour later they’re crawling over muddy clods with lacerated hands, drenched in claggy juice and cold sweat, as if ploughing through an endurance race.
