The Austrian Wine Marketing Board said figures from Statistik Austria showed a 10% increase in volume and 9% in value of bottled wine, with overall value sales up 2.6% at €122 million.
Total volumes were down 13.7% after a slump in bulk wine shipments, but the AWMB said the trend towards bottled sales was in line with its aims.
“The share of bottled wine exports increased to 91%, which is an essentially important development for the wine sector,” said general manager Willi Klinger.
“With this, we reached for the first time ever an average price of more than €2 per litre.
“Our goal over the next three years must be to further increase the exports of bottled wine.
“We think an export value of €142-148 million is possible.”
But a fall in harvest volumes of around 30% in 2010 is expected to put a dampener on future export sales.
