Raising a glass to Comic Relief

Retailers will raise money for disadvant­aged people in the UK and Africa with the seventh Wine Relief project.?This year’s campaign began on February 3 and will culminate with Red Nose Day on March 18. Participants include Marks & Spencer, Waitrose, Majestic, Laithwaites, Booths, Wine Rack and Virgin Wines.?“The concept is very simple,” said Wine Relief spokesperson Gino D’Acampo. “Every time you buy a bottle of wine from the Wine Relief range 10% goes straight to Comic Relief, which helps people in the UK and Africa.”

Jancis Robinson MW, who started the initiative with husband and restaurant critic Nick Lander, said: “Wine Relief provides wine lovers with a delicious excuse to treat their tastebuds, all in the name of charity.”?The selected wines include reds, whites and rosés “to suit every palate and purse”, the organisers say. Marks & Spencer’s Wine Relief selection includes Rockridge Chardonnay at £6.99, Charles Back Barbera at £9.99 and Villiera Barrel Aged Chenin at £10.49. Majestic has included Barbera d’Alba Sucule 2007 Villa Lanata at £9.99, Morgon 2009 Château de Pizay at £8.99 and some vegetarian wines including Pinot Gris 2008 Cave de Turckheim at £8.99.

Since its launch in 1999, Wine Relief has helped to raise £3.8 million for Comic Relief.

English wine: a happy harvest for Christmas

All across England and Wales, vineyards are being harvested. Down winding country lanes come armies of welly-wearing conscripts wielding secateurs and buckets, ready to reap the rewards of our vines. Happily they come, their cheeks ruddy with pride. Half an hour later they’re crawling over muddy clods with lacerated hands, drenched in claggy juice and cold sweat, as if ploughing through an endurance race.
