Drinkaware hires former MP to front campaign

12 January, 2007

The Drinkaware Trust has appointed Debra Shipley as its new chair.

Shipley was MP for Stourbridge until 2005, and has campaigned on child protection issues. She said: "I believe that the challenge of reducing harm caused by alcohol misuse is one of the key issues facing society today.

"It affects individuals, families and communities. Drinkaware will campaign to increase awareness of the harm caused by misuse of alcohol, to challenge attitudes and to improve behaviour."

Diageo Europe president and steering group member Andrew Morgan said: "I am delighted we have been able to appoint such an energetic and accomplished chair of the new Trust. Debra will have Diageo's full support in her quest to reduce the misuse of alcohol."

The charity is to be governed by 13 independent trustees from the health, education and voluntary sectors, and from the drinks industry. A board of trustees is expected to be put in place over the next few months and the alcohol industry has pledged to donate £12 million over the next three years.

Drinkaware has also launched a website as a way of communicating with retailers, fundraisers, government officials, campaigners and educators.

The new site, at www.drinkawaretrust.org.uk, will run alongside the consumer website, www.drinkaware.co.uk, providing corporate data to stakeholders.
