How much will you spend on drink over the festive season?

Drinks shoppers planned to spend 7 per cent more on drinks this festive season - despite a planned 5 per cent drop in spending on wine, a survey by accountancy firm Deloitte revealed this new year. Consumers across all age groups planned to spend an average of £85.40 per person on drink over Christmas and the new year, compared to £80.10 in 2005. All ages planned to spend less on wine, except for over-65s who planned to spend significantly more - £27.60 per person compared to £21.63 in 2005. "The projected fall in spend on wine probably reflects a perceived reduction in the cost of wine," said Deloitte. Consulting director Tim Wilson said: "Middle-aged drinkers plan to spend the most on wine, more than twice as much as younger drinkers - the 45-64 age group planned to spend £32.26 per person, compared to £15.26 for the 18-24 age group. The focus on money-off promotions on wine may account for the lower spend. Grocers and beverage firms need to consider the impact of their promotions on the 18-24 age group."
