Cains brews up anniversary bock

12 January, 2007

Liverpool brewer Cains has this week launched an 8 per cent abv bock lager to celebrate the 800th anniversary of Liverpool being named a city.

Bock is a dark lager first brewed in Munich, and the beers were traditionally brewed to commemorate special occasions. Cains' Double Bock is made with Munich malt and Saaz and Hallertau hops, and comes in 50cl bottles. Joint managing director Ajmail Dusanj said: "As bock takes longer to mature than most lagers its arrival was often timed to commemorate something special. We thought it would be a great opportunity to help the city celebrate."

Cains is celebrating its own history as well as Liverpool's. It has commissioned Chris Routledge to write the official history of the brewery, under the working title The Story of Liverpool in a Pint.

Routledge said: "The book will show the history of the brewery and its connection with the fortunes of Liverpool. "

He is looking for people with memories of the brewery, particularly from the war years and the 1960s. Contact him on cainsproject@wordcave.co.uk.Cains 0151 709 873

Looking back to look forward

Wine is a liquid time capsule. Drinking older vintages not only recalls the weather conditions and winemaking styles of the past, it encourages us to reflect upon our own histories. Such reminiscence often inclines towards romanticised nostalgia. Especially after the second bottle. But looking back is a great way of learning about the future.
