Villa Maria Cellar Selection Pinot Gris, Marlborough, 2006

Supplier: Hatch Mansfield

An elegant, dry white with pleasing citrus notes and hints of minerality. A great example of what the Pinot Gris grape can produce in the right conditions. RE

Lindemans Bin 25 Brut Cuvée NV

Supplier: Foster's EMEA

A blend of sparkling grape varieties, pale gold with fine bubbles.

The yeasty aroma on the nose is followed by complex tropical fruit on the palate, with crisp acidity and a dry finish.RE

Esk Valley Estate Black Label Riesling, Hawke's Bay, 2005

Supplier: Hatch Mansfield

This delicate, pale lemon liquid has a deceptive appearance. A knock-your-socks-off blast of petrol on the nose is followed by delicate citrus fruit on the palate. Dry and delicious. RE

Looking back to look forward

Wine is a liquid time capsule. Drinking older vintages not only recalls the weather conditions and winemaking styles of the past, it encourages us to reflect upon our own histories. Such reminiscence often inclines towards romanticised nostalgia. Especially after the second bottle. But looking back is a great way of learning about the future.
