If you're an independent, specialist chain or convenience store, cider is your secret weapon in the battle against the supermarkets. While multiple grocers dominate the drinks market as a whole, cider is the one category where volume sales are split nearly equally between supermarkets and the impulse sector, according to the latest Nielsen statistics.

Despite their much-publicised loss-leading on beer, supermarkets account for only

60 per cent of lager sold in the UK off-trade, and 65 per cent of the total beer market. Wine is a stronger suit - multiple grocers account for 73 per cent of light wine, 77 per cent of fortified wine and 81 per cent of sparkling wine.

Hofmeister may need more than the bear essentials to succeed

So, George The Bear is back. It’s hard for some of us oldies to fathom, but there are those under, say, 40 who can’t actually remember Hofmeister and feel the cultural jolt supplied by the return of both the bear and the beer whose marketing campaigns it used to front.
