Spanish deadline extended

The deadline for entries in this year's New Wave Spanish Wine Awards has been extended to April 27 in view of the number of events in the wine trade calendar. Wines being entered for the event need to be received by Sensible Wine Services by May 17 at the latest. The judging for the awards takes place in London on June 7 and 8. Wines of Chile tastings

Wines of Chile is hosting four regional trade tastings around the UK this year - starting with an event in Glasgow on May 10, at which 20 wineries will present over 200 wines . Specialist Brand Development has signed a deal to distribute Japanese lagers Sapporo and Yebisu in the UK. Sapporo, a golden lager with 5 per cent abv, comes in a distinctive 65cl can. Managing director Nick Holmes said: "Sapporo is a world famous Japanese brand, and it carries with it all the sophistication, style and quality that British consumers associate with contemporary Japan. The new link with Sapporo reinforces our strategy of bringing greater choice to the UK beer market."

Waitrose drinks magazine

Waitrose has launched a 24-page monthly drinks magazine that will be free in stores. Thirst will feature product news on wines, beers and spirits, interviews with well-known personalities and recipes with notes on food and drink matching. Each issue has a theme with the first, out on April 10, supporting the French Wine Showcase store promotion.

Tahbilk appoints Ehrmanns

Tahbilk, one of the oldest wineries in Australia, has appointed Ehrmanns as its UK agent and will notably be targeting independent retailers through the Ehrmanns Independent Selection. Tahbilk was founded in Victoria in 1860, and produces Marsanne and Viognier wines as well as more common Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay.

Cadbury's Tipping dies

Mike Tipping, Cadbury Trebor Bassett's head of customer relations, has died following a short illness. Tipping -

a well-known and respected character

in the trade - worked for Cadbury for

38 years.

Hofmeister may need more than the bear essentials to succeed
