London's Austrian delicatessen and wine merchant Kipferl has started importing wines for other businesses as well as its own shop. Owner Christian Malnig showed wines from three producers at the annual Austrian trade tasting in London - Kamptal-based Hager Matthias's fresh and crisp GrŁner Veltliners; a Riesling and a GV from Weingut Weixelbaum, which has been making wine in Kamptal since 1770; and Biegler, from Malnig's home town in the Thermenregion, which showed a Zweigelt and Zweigelt/Cabernet Sauvignon blend, both black fruit-driven and soft on the palate with good structure.

Kingsland Wines & Spirits is launching a new brand, Jacktone Range, at the Wine Institute of California tasting on March 13. The range consists of a 2005 Merlot and a 2005 Viognier. Both wines are sourced from McManis Family Vineyards. Kingsland will be on stand CI, with the vineyard's owner and president Ron McManis.

The WSET has teamed up with The Hide, the recently-opened bar on the ground floor of the WSET building in London, to raise money for Comic Relief. Visitors are being asked to answer a simple question and donate £2.50 to be in with a chance of winning prizes including WSET workshop tickets, a meal for two, or a year's subscription to Jancis Robinson's Purple Pages website.

World Wine Agencies of Bath has launched Saturday Red, a Californian Syrah blend, into the off-trade. The wine, which is made with a touch of Zinfandel, "aims to be fun, unpretentious and approachable to a broad target audience" said WWA. It has a retail of £5.99, but will be promoted at £2.99 at the Co-op from March 5 to 25.

Mitchell Beazley has launched its own wine library for connoisseurs and enthusiasts. Books will be written by top wine writers and will include in-depth information on wine regions or countries. The series will be launched in October with the release of Bordeaux by Stephen Brook.

Wine merchant House of Townend has appointed Jamie Connolly as area sales manager for north eastern England. New Zealander Connolly joins the company from Playford Ros and has also worked for Lanchester Wines.

Berkmann Wine Cellars has expanded its portfolio of Spanish wines. The five new wineries are Condesa Eylo in Rueda, Finca el Paso in Jumilia, Mas d'En Catala in Pirorat, Rudeles in Ribera del Duero and Matarredonda

in Toro.

Hofmeister may need more than the bear essentials to succeed

So, George The Bear is back. Itís hard for some of us oldies to fathom, but there are those under, say, 40 who canít actually remember Hofmeister and feel the cultural jolt supplied by the return of both the bear and the beer whose marketing campaigns it used to front.
