Spanish wines get representation in UK specialists

09 March, 2007

New World specialist Stratford's Wine Agencies has signed its first Spanish winery.

Somontano 's Bodegas Olvena will supply the Olvena range, which will initially target the independent trade, priced £5.99 - £17.99. The family-owned Bodegas Olvena, founded in 1999, produces wines exclusively from its 240ha estate and the tie-up marks its first serious foray into the UK market.

Winemaker José Luis Ruiz has worked in both Rioja and Somontano and has taken a contemporary approach to the wines while maintaining a strong Spanish identity from Tempranillo and Garnacha.

Rather than the traditional crianza, reserva and gran reserva offering, Olvena's reds offer blends with individual character - Coupage is a blend of Tempranillo, Cabernet and Merlot and Hache is blend of Garnacha and Syrah. Whites include Chardonnay and a Gewürztraminer.

Wines from another Somantano winery, Bodegas Irius, are due to hit the UK off-trade through 10 International. They include Disuperi rosé, a Garnacha/Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot , and a blend of Tempranillo, Merlot and Cabernet.
