Mendoza's Bodegas Catena Zapata Malbec 2004 was judged the best Malbec with roast beef in the first heat, held on May 1 at Glasgow's Hotel du Vin. Runners-up were Mendoza's Masi Tupungato Paso Doble 2005, the Co-op's Argentine Malbec 2006 from San Juan and Asda's La Rioja Argentine Malbec 2006. The competition to find the perfect Malbec wines to go with a range of British meat dishes is being run in conjunction with OLN's sister magazine Wine & Spirit and top restaurant groups. Full coverage of the first heat will appear in Wine & Spirit's June issue.
Two more heats will take place on May 30 in Harrogate and June 12 in Brighton; matching Malbec and Malbec-based wines to lamb and pork dishes, respectively. The final will be held on Sept 12 at the Gaucho restaurant in London's Piccadilly.
Wines of Argentina director James Forbes said Argentinian wines "perfectly partner virtually all meats and meat dishes".
