Two sips from the southern Rhône and South Australia

Caves Saint-Pierre, 2006

Côtes-du-Rhône

Supplier: Thierry's

Apple and citrus notes burst from this pale gold, summer slurper. Clean and fresh on the palate with a subtle minerality. Great value for the around-£5 price point. RE

Shingleback McLaren Vale

Cellar Door Shiraz 2005

Supplier: Raisin Social

Lovely packaging and wine that's equally classy. A smooth, cool and velvety wine that has an elegance you might not expect. (I expected more viscosity.) Try it slightly chilled. GH

Looking back to look forward

Wine is a liquid time capsule. Drinking older vintages not only recalls the weather conditions and winemaking styles of the past, it encourages us to reflect upon our own histories. Such reminiscence often inclines towards romanticised nostalgia. Especially after the second bottle. But looking back is a great way of learning about the future.
