Whyte & Mackay has been bought by United Spirits for £595 million. The Indian company is hoping to use Whyte & Mackay's Scotch whisky brands to meet growing demand in India and will also use the international link to export its own brands. Vins de Pays marketing boss Nöel Bougrier has issued a robust defence of the category following criticism in the May 4 edition of OLN. In a letter published on page 10, he highlights rising quality and attributes recent sales decline to a general downturn in own-label wine.
New chairman for The Bunch
James Tanner of Tanners Wines has taken over from Berry Bros' Alun Griffiths MW as chairman of six-strong independent wine merchant group The Bunch.
