Launch set for contactless cards

18 May, 2007

The first contactless credit and debit card will be launched in London this autumn following the success of a four-month trial run by Barclaycard and Oyster.

Barclaycard will work with retailers between now and September to update terminals to accept the cards.

They can be used in three ways: to pay for transactions under £10 using a special reader, as standard Chip & PIN readers for transactions over £10, and to store train tickets such as Oyster cards.

The terminals will be rolled out nationally in 2008.
