Mike Paul recruited as Orbital boss

01 June, 2007

In a surprise move, Mike Paul has been named managing director of Orbital wines, the Stormhoek and Camden Park supplier.

Paul, best known for his time as managing director of Western Wines and Southcorp Europe, joins a team which includes chief executive Jason Korman and director Nick Dymoke-Marr, who will now concentrate on developing a fine wine operation for Orbital.

Paul said: "I always thought Orbital was a great company with a lot of potential. The whole ethos is just great and they have been doing quite radical things.

"The idea of helping them develop this and take it slightly more mainstream without losing that innovation is great."

Paul is relinquishing his commitments with Match Consultants, Lovethatwine.com and Wine Intelligence but will remain on the latter's advisory board. His role at Orbital will be based full-time at the central London offices.

Orbital has launched an Australian range called Rule Breaker, which uses five unusual grape varieties in a move to break traditional wine boundaries.

The white is a Riesling/Chardonnay/Verdelho/Sangiovese/Marsanne blend, and the red a Shiraz/Cabernet Sauvignon/Sangiovese/Petit Verdot/Petit Syrah blend. Both will retail at £6.99.
