Champagne offer

The Thresher Group is offering customers 30 per cent off single bottles of Champagne and sparkling wine until June 18. A discount voucher was printed in national newspapers and posted on the retailer's website. A spokesman said it had dropped single bottle prices for Champagne and sparkling wine since taking them out of

three-for- two, and decided to offer 30 per cent off to attract new customers. The discount level will revert to 20 per cent after the promotion ends.

English wine push

Waitrose has put its entire English wine range online for English Wine Week. The retailer, which has doubled its range of English wine over the past 12 years, is selling 28 wines on Waitrose Wine Direct until June 3. It aims to stock between two and six local wines in every branch. Sales of English wine are up 40 per cent year on year, according to a Waitrose spokesman.

More against promotions

MP John Grogan's Early Day Motion calling for an end to cheap drinks promotions in supermarkets has attracted 195 signatures. Grogan, who is chair of the All-Parliamentary Beer Group, thinks the off-trade should follow pubs and clubs with a code of conduct banning alcohol at knockdown prices. The motion will remain open until November.

COMMENT

Welcoming the wine rookie

It’s all true. Wine writers loaf around in a state of partial inebriation and partial undress, bitching about having to taste free wine all day and using recondite words like malolactic, terroir and recondite.
