UK set for a Scotch whisky revival?

01 June, 2007

The UK market is ripe for a Scotch whisky revival, according to Whisky Shop chairman Ian Bankier.

Bankier said the potential for Scotch whisky was untapped. "A swing of the pendulum is well overdue," he told the audience at a London wine fair seminar last week.

He blamed the decline in malt whisky drinking on several factors; the fact that "Scotch is British" can breed contempt, the UK's love affair with wine and Champagne, high levels of duty, the stance of supermarkets, and suppliers not seeing the UK as a priority market.

The fortunes of Scotch could improve as the UK is still "the most successful economy in Europe", he said. "There's no reason why it should not recover."

Increasing multiculturalism and trends towards drinking premium whiskies could all boost whisky's fortunes, Bankier added.
