Viña Doña Paula Malbec 2005 was judged the best Malbec with Pork in
the third and final heat of Wines
of Argentina's Malbec for Meat competition. Twenty wines were whittled down to eight by six judges, with the Oddbins wine judged the best match. WOA's UK director James Forbes said: "Any idea that Malbec
is somehow too powerful for delicate food flavours was completely blown apart by this tasting." The wine plus
four runners-up will be judged against 10 other finalists in the beef and lamb categories in the grand final at the Gaucho restaurant in Piccadilly on
Sept 12. The competition has been organised by WOA in conjunction with OLN's sister publication Wine & Spirit, the Hotel du Vin & Bistro and Gaucho Restaurant groups.
The four winners of South West Wines' competition to win two cases of wine (OLN, May 18) are Stephen Lau (London), Paul Quinn (Cumbria), Jennifer Docherty (London) and John Jaswilowicz (London). The winners correctly identified the principal grape varieties used to make Cahors AOC - Malbec (aka Côt and Auxerrois), Merlot and Tannat. SWW will contact each winner direct to arrange delivery.
