Rosé blooms at Tesco

Tesco will double the number of rosé lines it sells this summer to cash in on the category’s rising popularity.

From Aug 13, the retailer will stock a total of 65 different rosés, with more coming from Provence and Spain than previously.

Tesco’s wine category manager, Jason Godley said: “We see rosé as a huge growth area from all countries. I think this change will mean we will probably have the widest range of rosés of any retailer.”

Godley said although sales of rosé traditionally increased during the summer, he expected them to continue to rise throughout the course of the year.

“It’s becoming an all year round purchase, so we are looking forward and think it is going to be bigger every year,” he said.

The new rosés available at Tesco will be on shelves until 2009.

Rosé sales grew by 29 per cent in the year to February 24 (Nielsen), the biggest growth area for light wine.

Rosé tinted glasses

I was asked recently what I thought the biggest change had been in wine fashion in the past five years. My answer was unequivocal: sales of pink wines. From being a niche that expanded and contracted with the sunshine, rosé has subtly but steadily become a stalwart of many merchants’ ranges, with Provence firmly at the top and asked for by name.
