Smirnoff goes mobile

Diageo has launched what it says is the first mobile phone website for an alcoholic drinks brand. Consumers will be able to view clips for Smirnoff's latest TV ad via their mobile phones at The site features a Nightlife Guide, featuring information on a selection of UK bars and a Pocket Bartender containing a collection of Smirnoff cocktails. Marketing manager Chris Lock said: "Smirnoff in GB is leading the way in the implementation of this exciting new strand of digital marketing ."

Rueda presence for United

United Wineries has bought the Vega de la Reina winery in Rueda. Managing director Xavier Batlle said: "We are extremely pleased to have secured a presence in Rueda as there is a real opportunity for Spain to develop its production of high quality, varietally -led white wine. From the 2007 vintage onwards, wines produced at Vega de la Reina will be part of the Marqués de la Concordia Family of Wines.

Thresher summer promotion

Thresher 's latest promotion is 35 per cent off six or more bottles of any still wine. National press ads promote the offer, which runs until July 22 in branches of Threshers . It will also stock its first nationally-listed English wine - Chapel Down Brut - in 400 stores.

Marketing boss for Cobra

Will Ghali has been appointed as Cobra's marketing director. Ghali - who joins from PepsiCo - said the brand had potential to grow in the mainstream market "where Cobra is just beginning to make its presence felt". Cobra chief executive Lord Bilimoria said Ghali's appointment would strengthen its mission to become a global beer brand. Ghali replaces Simon Edwards, who has moved overseas with his family.

Distance selling link-up

The WSTA and the International Wine Clubs Association are to work together to support the distance selling industry. The IWCA will move to the International Wine & Spirit Centre in September and Karen Gerrard will take over from chief executive Barry Sutton. The IWCA helps its 45 members improve their trading performance and commissions research on trends in the industry.

ACS advice forum

The Association of Convenience Stores' off-licence forum will take place on July 19. It will offer members advice on issues affecting them including updates on legislation from local authorities and licensing experts. For further information and registration, call Karen Read on 01252 515001.

Premium Passion for Ehrmanns

Ehrmanns has launched Winemaker's Passion - a premium extension to Blue Nun's core range - into Morrisons. The Riesling will be available from the second week of July. Marketing director Keith Lay described it as a "premium option for new or loyal customers ".
