What an extraordinary mix of issues in the latest OLN .

I was dismayed that the normally sensible BMA can seriously think it unwise to suggest food with wine but equally delighted that slammers and shots are getting a thumbs-down.

The test purchasing article made my hackles rise with anger at the injustice we, as independent retailers, have to contend with in respect of our efforts to prevent under-age selling.

However, the wonderful spat between Malcolm Gluck and Tim Atkin was there to lift my spirits, again. I do not often agree with Mr Gluck's views but he does make it clear that he rates wines on a value-for-money basis. Is there any other way? If one is in the position of having to sell the wines one lists, it is imperative to consider the selling price when tasting and rating choices.

I agree that there are some excellent English wines but they do not stand up to scrutiny when the cost is included in the equation. In this respect English wines rule themselves off my list.

I doubt that this will, in any way, settle the argument but I could not resist sticking my oar in .

Rosé tinted glasses

I was asked recently what I thought the biggest change had been in wine fashion in the past five years. My answer was unequivocal: sales of pink wines. From being a niche that expanded and contracted with the sunshine, rosé has subtly but steadily become a stalwart of many merchants’ ranges, with Provence firmly at the top and asked for by name.
