It's been a year of upheaval for Gallo. Ernest Gallo, who founded the Sonoma winery with his brother Julio in 1993, died in March aged 97. Mark Tinsley has been appointed off-trade director after Lloyd Stephens left to become Thresher's trading director; Nick Elkin has been named grocery & retail development controller and Ian Thomas is impulse channel controller. The entry-level Sierra Valley wines are being rebranded as Winemakers' Seal, which will roll out in September, and the core Gallo brands were relaunched as Gallo Family Vineyards. Gallo has embarked on a high profile marketing push including a £2.5 million ad campaign which launched in May. It is also teaming up with Walkers Sensations to match its wines with crisps, and it is encouraging on-trade consumers to drink its white Grenache and white Zinfandel rosés over ice.

English wine: a happy harvest for Christmas

All across England and Wales, vineyards are being harvested. Down winding country lanes come armies of welly-wearing conscripts wielding secateurs and buckets, ready to reap the rewards of our vines. Happily they come, their cheeks ruddy with pride. Half an hour later they’re crawling over muddy clods with lacerated hands, drenched in claggy juice and cold sweat, as if ploughing through an endurance race.
