Record profit growth for Greene King

Greene King's off-trade volume sales have grown 6.5 per cent since last year.

The Suffolk brewer made a pre-tax profit of £139.8 million in the year to April 29

- 17 per cent up on the year before.

Old Speckled Hen grew its market share by 0.3 per cent, and in the multiple retailers it increased its market share from 9.8 per cent to 10.3 per cent. Greene King said Nielsen data showed its value share of ale grew by 0.5 per cent to 8.8 per cent.

Chief executive Rooney Anand said he was pleased the company had seen strong performances across all divisions.

"These record results are another step

of uninterrupted profit growth in over four decades," he said.

What makes wine special

Reaching the 50th instalment of Hemmingís Way is hardly the biggest milestone, but I donít need much of an excuse to pour myself a glass of champagne before getting dressed. Itís a better reason than I had for all 49 other instalments, anyway. Not that that stopped me.
