Wye Valley Brewery has invested in two new fermenting vessels and a racking tank in a bid to meet demand during what it expects to be a bumper year. Managing director Vernon Amor said the brewer is "way ahead of our sales budgets so far this year".

Different barleys can give beers as varied a range of tastes as different grape varieties can give to wine, according to research by Brewing Research International commissioned by maltster and malting barley buyer Robin Appel. Jonathan Arnold, sales director of Robin Appel, said: "We want to take the tasting to our own barley farmers to show them that they are growing flavour and not just a low-nitrogen agricultural commodity." The company also hopes to explore the individual flavours of Maris Otter barley grown in different parts of the UK.

Suffolk brewer Adnams hosted a Hyde Park bar at the party for the Tour de France in London as part of its Beer From the Coast marketing campaign.

Amstel is sponsoring the Big Chill festival in Herefordshire in August.

English wine: a happy harvest for Christmas

All across England and Wales, vineyards are being harvested. Down winding country lanes come armies of welly-wearing conscripts wielding secateurs and buckets, ready to reap the rewards of our vines. Happily they come, their cheeks ruddy with pride. Half an hour later they’re crawling over muddy clods with lacerated hands, drenched in claggy juice and cold sweat, as if ploughing through an endurance race.
