Victor catches eye of Oz winemaker

Australian producer De Bortoli is taking on a Champagne brand in the UK as part of a strategy to source wines with a "unique story" from independent winemakers.

Champagne Victor is produced by Victor Lanson - the 7th generation of the original Lanson family - and will be launched to independent retailers and wholesalers.

Lanson said: "I want drinkers of Champagne Victor to feel free to appreciate this rare Champagne without being pushed into buying big brands - Victor is a romantic Champagne label and it has provenance."

John Thorne, UK Manager for De Bortoli Wines, said: "De Bortoli already has a good reputation and its followers love good quality wines. We chose Champagne Victor because it is on the same level of delivering quality wine. I want it to grow organically, along the same lines that we grew De Bortoli ."

Champagne Victor and Victor Pink will be the first wines to kick-start De Bortoli's new venture.

Lanson added: "It's so nice to see one of Australia's big boys is back in France and passionate enough about independent brands to take up the challenge. De Bortoli is a huge Australian player taking on an unknown French Champagne and this is very refreshing."
